My Friend Loves Her Baby With Down Syndrome, But She Is Exhausted — When Did Things Get Easier for Your Family?
By Charlotte on
A friend of mine has a 7-month-old son with Down syndrome, and she recently admitted that she is struggling more than she ever expected.
Thankfully, her son does not have a heart condition or need cardiac surgery, and she knows how fortunate they are in that respect.
But the day-to-day care has still been overwhelming.
Feeding has been particularly difficult, and it seems like her entire day revolves around getting him to eat, keeping up with appointments, and figuring out what he needs next.
She also has three older children, and that has been one of the hardest parts for her.
She misses being able to sit down with them, go somewhere spontaneously, or simply give them her full attention without constantly thinking about what the baby needs.
She is a full-time stay-at-home mom right now, and she has started worrying about her career too.
She loves her son completely. She has made that very clear.
But she is also tired, and I think more parents need to know that those two things can exist at the same time.
Being exhausted does not mean you regret your child.
Sometimes you can be incredibly grateful for your family and still desperately need a break.
She asked me if I could find parents who have been through this stage and are willing to share some honest stories.
Did things eventually become more manageable for your family?
Did feeding get easier as your child got older?
Did your child become more independent in ways that gave you some breathing room?
How did you balance the needs of your child with Down syndrome with the needs of your other children?
And what did you do when the stress started becoming too much?
She isn't looking for someone to tell her that everything will be perfect.
She just wants to hear from parents who were once exhausted and overwhelmed and eventually found a rhythm that worked for their family.
If that was you, what was the turning point? What changed that made everyday life feel a little more manageable?
