My Friend’s Son Met Another Little Boy With Down Syndrome at the Playground

By Eli Mercer on

My friend’s son is 2 and has Down syndrome. A few weeks ago, she took him to a local playground and something really sweet happened. There was another little boy there who also has Down syndrome. He was probably around 4 or 5, and at first the boys were just doing their own thing. Then the other boy noticed my friend’s son sitting near his mom. He walked over, looked at him for a second, and gave him the biggest smile. My friend’s son just stared back at him, then started smiling too. The other boy waved, so her son tried to wave back. Neither one of them said much, but they kept looking at each other like they were trying to figure each other out. Their moms ended up talking while the boys stayed nearby playing. My friend said it was one of those completely ordinary little moments that somehow stays with you. She’s had a couple of experiences like this now where someone with Down syndrome notices her son and comes over to say hi or interact with him. She doesn't assume every person with Down syndrome will automatically connect with another person with Down syndrome. But she does love seeing her son grow up in a world where moments like this can happen naturally. It also made her wonder how many more of these little encounters they'll have as he gets older.
