What Made You Feel Genuinely Supported After Your Baby Arrived?

By JugglingNothing on

A close friend recently welcomed a baby with Down syndrome. The diagnosis was unexpected, and while they’re still taking everything in, I want them to know that I’m here without overwhelming them. Most importantly, I want to celebrate their baby just as I would any other newborn. I’m planning to congratulate them, check in without expecting immediate replies, and offer practical help instead of giving unsolicited advice. For a gift, I’m considering a soft play mat, board books, clothes, or another regular baby item. I’ve also thought about a meal delivery or gas gift card in case appointments or hospital visits are taking up a lot of their time. I understand that every baby is different, so I don’t want to choose something based only on the diagnosis. Would it be better to buy a typical newborn gift, ask the parents directly, or focus on something practical for the whole family? For parents in this community, what did your friends do or say that made you feel supported during those early weeks?
