I was accidentally feeding my anxiety without realizing it

One thing I didn’t understand about anxiety is that the more attention I gave it, the stronger it became. I used to constantly check myself throughout the day. How’s my breathing? Does my chest feel tight? Am I anxious right now? I thought I was helping myself stay in control, but it actually kept me stuck in a cycle. The more I focused on anxiety, the more my nervous system treated it like a real threat. I’d notice a small sensation, overanalyze it, then become anxious about being anxious. After that, I’d monitor myself even more. It became exhausting. What helped was stopping the constant self-checking. Not ignoring anxiety completely, but not making it the center of my attention all day either. I started focusing more on the world around me instead of constantly analyzing what was happening inside my body. Small things helped: music, walks, conversations, and staying present. Over time, my mind stopped treating every sensation like an emergency. If you struggle with this too, pay attention to how often you mentally check yourself. Sometimes the constant focus is what keeps the anxiety cycle going.
