I didn’t think meditation would help my anxiety but 10 minutes actually made a difference

By Eli Mercer on

I used to think meditation was one of those things that only worked for super calm people. My mind was always racing, so sitting quietly with my thoughts sounded impossible. But when my overthinking got really bad, I decided to try it anyway. Just 10 minutes. Nothing intense. The first few times were honestly frustrating. My mind kept wandering, and I thought I was “doing it wrong.” But after a while, I realized meditation wasn’t about having zero thoughts. It was more about slowing down enough to stop getting pulled into every single thought that showed up. That small shift helped me more than I expected. Before, my brain felt nonstop all day long. I’d replay conversations, worry about things that hadn’t happened yet, and mentally exhaust myself over little things. Taking even 10 minutes to sit quietly, breathe, and reset gave my mind a break from all the noise. What surprised me most was how much calmer I felt afterward. Not magically cured, but lighter. Less trapped inside my own head. Now I try to make it part of my routine, especially on days when my anxiety feels louder than usual. Sometimes I use calming music; sometimes I just sit in silence. It’s one of the few things that helps me slow my thoughts down instead of constantly fighting them. If overthinking is draining you, even giving yourself 10 quiet minutes a day can help more than you think. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just giving your mind a moment to breathe can make a real difference.
