Getting out of my own head helped my social anxiety

By Eli Mercer on

For years, social anxiety made me overthink everything. I'd replay conversations, worry about how I came across, and assume people were judging me more than they actually were. What I eventually realized was that I spent so much time focusing on myself that I barely paid attention to what was happening around me. Things started to improve when I stopped making anxiety the center of every interaction. I stayed busy with things that mattered to me, focused on small goals, and looked for simple ways to connect with other people. A kind message. A genuine compliment. A quick conversation. Those small moments helped shift my attention outward instead of constantly monitoring myself. Social anxiety didn't disappear overnight, but it became easier to manage. One lesson that stuck with me is this: try to be a bright spot in someone's day. And don't forget to do the same for yourself. Sometimes progress isn't becoming the most confident person in the room. Sometimes it's simply showing up, even when anxiety tells you not to.
