My Friend Is in Medical School, and I Never Realized How Much Anxiety She Was Hiding

By Eli Mercer on

A close friend of mine is in medical school, and recently she shared something that really stuck with me. From the outside, she looked like she had everything together. She showed up to class, kept up with assignments, and always seemed calm. But behind the scenes, she was barely sleeping because her mind wouldn't switch off. She'd wake up exhausted, push through the day, and then lie awake at night doing it all over again. She also told me that social anxiety made it hard to build real friendships. She knew plenty of people, but she still felt alone because she didn't feel safe opening up to anyone. The part that broke my heart was hearing how her psychiatry classes affected her. She witnessed domestic violence growing up, so when those topics came up in lectures, it wasn't just something she was studying. It brought back memories she wasn't expecting, and some days it became almost impossible to concentrate. She'd tried CBT exercises and meditation. They helped a little, but staying consistent felt almost impossible when she was already emotionally exhausted. Listening to her reminded me that anxiety is rarely just one thing. Sometimes it's stress, trauma, loneliness, and lack of sleep all feeding into each other. It also reminded me that the people who seem to be coping the best may be carrying the heaviest load. If you've ever been in a similar place or supported someone who has, I'd love to hear what helped. I think more people are quietly struggling than we realize.
