My Anxiety Is Almost Gone, But So Are My Emotions

By Eli Mercer on

About two years ago, after dealing with anxiety, depression, and other health problems for around 10 years, I finally decided to try medication. It helped my anxiety more than I ever expected. The constant fear and overwhelming anxiety became much easier to manage, and I'm genuinely grateful for that. But something else happened that I didn't expect. I started feeling emotionally flat. The really low points weren't as bad anymore, but the highs didn't seem as high either. I could enjoy things, but the excitement just wasn't there in the same way. About six months ago, I talked with my doctor about coming off the medication to see how I'd cope without it. For a while, I felt incredible. It was honestly like someone had turned the color back on in the world. I felt alive again, and I realized how much I'd been missing that feeling. Then I had two major episodes, and it became obvious that being off medication wasn't working for me. After talking with my doctor, I went back on it. My anxiety is much better again, but now I'm dealing with that emotional numbness all over again. Life isn't necessarily bad. That's the strange part. I just don't feel strongly about much anymore. Things that used to excite me don't have the same effect. It's almost like I'm watching my life rather than really experiencing it. My doctor has suggested trying a different medication to see whether I respond differently, and I'm open to discussing it. I'm definitely not planning to change anything on my own after what happened the last time. I'm curious if anyone here has experienced something similar. Did you ever find a treatment that helped your anxiety without leaving you feeling emotionally numb or disconnected from the things you used to enjoy?
