What I do when aphasia makes information hard to hold onto
By JugglingNothing on
I’ve lived with aphasia all my life, and remembering new information can still be difficult for me. Sometimes I understand something in the moment, but a few minutes later, I struggle to bring it back.
One method that helps me is writing the information on paper and reading it aloud. I repeat it several times, cover the page, and try to recall it without looking. If I forget, I uncover it and start again.
It can take time, so patience matters. Pressure and frustration usually make learning harder. Writing, speaking, hearing, and repeating the information give me more ways to practice it.
This may not work for everyone, but it has helped me. A speech-language pathologist can also recommend strategies for individual needs.
