My Uncle finds his voice through writing
By Charlotte on
My uncle has aphasia, and speaking can take a lot of effort. Writing gives him more time to find the words he wants without feeling rushed.
After aphasia affected his speaking, reading, and writing, he began rebuilding slowly. He practiced familiar words, wrote short sentences, and read them back. Some days the words came easily. Other days he needed a break.
Our family is also learning. We try to give him time, avoid finishing his sentences, and pay attention to how he prefers to communicate.
He has taught us that difficulty speaking does not mean someone has nothing to say. Speech is only one form of communication. Writing, gestures, pictures, and assistive tools can carry just as much meaning.
