What schools don’t want parents to know about an IEP

What schools don’t want parents to know about an IEP. An IEP meeting is often presented as if the school is deciding what your child gets. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. Parents are equal members of the IEP team. You have a voice. You have the right to ask questions. You have the right to disagree. You have the right to request evaluations, services, supports, accommodations, and changes. Too many parents walk into meetings believing they should simply be grateful for whatever is offered. That’s exactly how children end up with weak goals, inadequate services, and years of limited progress. The school may be the expert on education. You are the expert on your child. The best outcomes happen when both perspectives are heard. Don’t treat an IEP meeting like a presentation. Treat it like a negotiation about your child’s future. Because that’s exactly what it is. www.YourChild.org #IEP #SpecialEducation #Autism #ADHD #504Plan #SpecialEducationAdvocate #ParentAdvocate #IEPHelp #SpecialNeedsParenting #YourChild
