Surrounded by people at Christmas... still unsure how to connect

By JugglingNothing on

There were a lot of people who came home for Christmas, but meeting new people sometimes feels incredibly difficult… I don’t know why, but even when I’m surrounded by others, I still feel completely separate from them.

I can confirm that the older I get, the harder this seems to be. The holidays make it more obvious. Everyone talks about catching up, parties, and reconnecting, but most of those interactions feel loud, fast, and surface-level. I can be physically present and still feel like I’m not really there with anyone.

I don’t want a big social circle. I don’t want constant interaction. What I’m looking for is something slow, predictable, and meaningful. Sitting around a campfire once a month. Listening to music together without needing to talk much. Reading in the same space. Just being around someone without pressure to perform socially.

I struggle to bond with people. Not because I don’t care but because my connection style is different. I need time, repetition, and safety. Conversations don’t naturally turn into relationships for me. I don’t always know how to move from “acquaintance” to “person in my life,” and that gap feels impossible to cross.

During Christmas gatherings, I noticed how easily others slide back into friendships, joking and reminiscing. For me, every interaction still feels like starting from zero. It’s exhausting, and after a while I shut down rather than push myself further.

I’m not asking how to be more social. I’m asking how to build real connections as an adult when your nervous system, communication style, and energy limits are different...
