How do nonverbal people set physical boundaries?

By Charlotte on

This is something I’ve been struggling with a lot. In group therapy, people sometimes touch my shoulder without asking, and it makes me really uncomfortable. I don’t like it at all, it feels invasive, and it stresses me out.

When we go on trips, like to the farm, it’s even harder. Carrying a communication book, paper, or whiteboard isn’t practical, and sometimes I forget to bring them. That means there’s no easy way for me to say, “please don’t touch me,” and people just assume it’s okay.

Small touches or unwanted contact can feel overwhelming, and it’s exhausting when you have to rely on remembering tools or hoping someone notices your discomfort.

How do you let people know your boundaries without needing something to write with?
