Has Anyone Actually Had a Good Experience With a Group Home?

By Real Ray C on

I'm a parent of an autistic adult with very high support needs, and we're currently on a waiting list for an intermediate care group home. I'll be honest. I'm scared. I've read so many stories about neglect, abusive staff, poor supervision, and families having to fight to get their loved one properly cared for. As a parent, it's hard not to imagine the worst when you're considering leaving someone you love in the care of people you don't know. My biggest concern isn't finding a perfect home. I want to know that my loved one will be safe, treated with dignity, medically supported, and cared for by people who actually understand profound autism. We've been told the placement will have a medical focus and that they'll try to find a quieter home without a lot of serious behavioral issues. That sounds like what we need, but I'm still nervous. I've spent years learning the little things that help my loved one feel safe and communicating what they can't always say themselves. Handing that responsibility over to a group of strangers is a huge emotional step. At the same time, I know there have to be good group homes out there. I've heard families talk about placements where the staff are kind, consistent, and genuinely invested in the people who live there. That's the experience I'm hoping to find. I'm just hoping to hear some positive experiences along with the difficult ones, because right now I could really use some reassurance that safe, compassionate residential care does exist.
