What Happens When Every Program Says Your Child Needs Too Much Support?
By Charlotte on
My partner and I keep asking the same question: what happens if another program says it cannot support our child?
Our child has profound autism and sometimes experiences behaviors that can put them or others at risk. We work hard to keep everyone safe while remembering that behavior may communicate pain, fear, overload, or an unmet need.
Yet some programs cannot support children who need toileting assistance, are non-speaking, or experience aggression, self-injury, or elopement. The children with the greatest needs can end up with the fewest options.
We are not asking anyone to “fix” our child. We need professionals willing to understand them and provide safe, respectful, consistent support.
Has your family ever been turned away because your child’s needs were considered too complex? What did you do next?
