I Love My Child Deeply, and I’m Still Exhausted

By Real Ray C on

There are evenings when my child finally settles and my partner asks if I’m okay. I usually say I’m fine, even when I feel completely drained. The interrupted sleep, constant supervision, appointments, and safety concerns can take everything out of me. That exhaustion is not my child’s fault. I love them deeply, including the parts of them that other people may not understand. What wears me down is providing round-the-clock care without enough rest, help, or reassurance about the future. I can celebrate my child’s progress and still feel sad about experiences our family misses. I can feel hopeful one moment and worried the next. None of those feelings cancel out my love. Sometimes support looks like my partner taking over for an hour. Sometimes it is a friend checking in, another parent listening, or finally accepting help without feeling guilty. Even a short pause can help me breathe and begin again. Parents and caregivers should not have to pretend that love makes exhaustion disappear. We deserve places where we can speak honestly without our children being blamed or our devotion being questioned.
