An unexpected win in my relationship

By JugglingNothing on

The other night, something small happened that felt huge,  the kind of moment that might seem ordinary to others, but for me, it was unforgettable.

My girlfriend and I went for a quiet evening walk, just before sundown. The world felt softer at that time of day less crowded, less noisy, easier for me to breathe.

Usually, when things get unpredictable, I freeze up or pull away. Change and spontaneity can feel overwhelming. But this time was different. At one point, I accidentally bumped into her while we were laughing about something. I paused, unsure of what to do next. Instead of overthinking, I just hugged her. It wasn’t planned. It just… happened. And the look on her face told me it mattered.

Later, she pointed at my shoes — and without hesitating, I made a joke about them being my “lucky Pokémon shoes.” (Predictable, I know 😅). But she laughed. Not the polite kind of laugh, but the genuine one that makes you feel seen.

As we kept walking, I found myself doing little things I rarely do: waiting for her to catch up so we could walk side by side, pointing out random details (like a flower that caught my eye), and even reaching for her hand without second-guessing if it was the “right time.”

For someone like me, who often struggles with when and how to connect, this wasn’t just a walk. It was a series of small victories: choosing closeness instead of pulling away, speaking instead of staying silent, showing affection without overthinking it.

It might have looked like nothing special. But for me, it was a night I thought I’d never have. A night where connection felt natural not forced, not rehearsed, just real.
