The Line In The Sandwich

By Lt. Dan on

Human relationships are hard enough to navigate without neurodivergent issues, but here we are. I mean just look at the chaos that is the dating science; the impossible images that Hollywood presents and even the attempt that most churches make to regulate or smooth this troubled area.

Our society has blurred the lines of relationships to where a lot of us can’t tell where friendship ends and romance begins - even half of all marriages end in divorce where the ‘rules’ of forever were well defined at the beginning.

I believe that there is a profound need to better understand friendship and to develop character and integrity in how we relate to one another.  When the foundations are destroyed,

what can the righteous do? ~ Psalm 11:3

So many of us were never taught what friendship really is - what is fed us from infancy is hook-up culture and the idea that we need a partner to be whole. It pretty much precludes any guy/girl relationships that are pure and wholesome, because somebody is going either ask “are you a couple?” or just assume you are in bed together.

The title of my post is inspired by the song from Frozen where Anna and Prince Hans sing about being such a good match that they ‘finishing each other’s sandwiches.’ In the end we see it is just limerence for Anna, and deceit on the part of Hans - and sadly we see this pattern repeated over and over in our culture today.

Let’s grow our moral character and explore the foundational principles of friendship, integrity and reliance on self and God to find the contentment that is the foundation of epic romantic relationships.
