Do you think movie dates are actually a good idea?

This year, I’m trying to be more intentional about how I connect with my girlfriend, and one idea I keep coming back to is doing more movie dates. Not just as a filler activity, but as something we actually build into our routine.
For me, movie dates feel… manageable. There’s a clear structure: you sit together, you watch something, you don’t have to constantly talk or perform. There’s shared experience without pressure. I like knowing what’s coming next, how long it will last, and what the expectations are. That alone makes it feel safer and more enjoyable.
What I really like is the after part talking about the movie once it’s over. It gives us something concrete to connect over. I don’t always know how to start deeper conversations out of nowhere, but reacting to a story, a character, or a scene makes it easier. It feels more natural than trying to come up with things to say on the spot.
I also appreciate the sensory side of it. The lighting is dim, the focus is on one thing, and we’re not bouncing between too many stimuli. Compared to loud restaurants or crowded social settings, movie dates help me stay present instead of overwhelmed.
That said, I don’t want it to turn into just sitting next to each other in silence every time. I’m thinking about mixing it up movie nights at home, smaller theaters, maybe pairing the movie with a walk or late-night food afterward so it still feels intentional and connected.
I’m curious. Do movie dates help you feel closer to your partner, or do they feel too passive? How do you make them feel meaningful instead of just routine?
