It’s hard making friends in my new apartment...

By JugglingNothing on

My neighbors seem… mysterious. They leave super early in the morning and don’t get back until late at night. I’ll hear doors open and close, footsteps in the hallway, but we’ve never really crossed paths long enough to say more than a quick “hey.” It kind of feels like I live around people, not with people.

I’ve learned how to navigate a lot socially, starting friendships from scratch is still hard for me. I don’t always know when it’s appropriate to strike up a conversation. I overthink it. Like, is it weird to introduce myself randomly? Is it too late now since I’ve been here a few months? Am I supposed to just magically bump into someone and let it happen naturally?

The truth is, regardless of being autistic, I just get lonely sometimes. I’d like to have someone nearby to grab coffee with, watch a game, or even just talk about random life stuff. Nothing dramatic just normal friendship.

Making friends as an adult feels way harder than it did growing up. Everyone already has their routines, their circles, their busy schedules. And when you’re not naturally outgoing, it can feel like you’re always waiting for the “right moment” that never comes.
