Flirting with everyone… where’s the Line?
By Eli Mercer on
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
I’ve been in relationships where my partner said flirting didn’t mean anything. Just jokes, charm, being friendly. Meanwhile, I was watching the same interactions and feeling confused. To me, flirting feels intentional. Like you’re sending a signal, even if you say you’re not.
I don’t flirt when I’m in a relationship. Not because I’m trying to be strict, but because my brain doesn’t separate “harmless” flirting from crossing a line. If I wouldn’t want it done to me, I don’t do it to someone else.
What makes it harder is how normal flirting is at work, with friends, online. Some people call it a personality trait. Others quietly feel uncomfortable but don’t know how to explain why.
So I’m wondering: at what point does flirting stop being “nothing” and start being disrespectful? And how do you handle it when you and your partner clearly see that line in different places?
