Do you set boundaries in your relationships?

By Real Ray C on

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about boundaries in relationships, both friendships and dating. I’ve realized how important they are, but also how uncomfortable it can be when people don’t respect them.

I’ve always tried to do is be clear with my friends and the people I date: respect my boundaries, and I’ll respect yours. It sounds simple, but in reality it doesn’t always work out that way.

Sometimes the cost of keeping a friendship can start to feel too high when your boundaries keep getting crossed. Things like constant calls when you’ve said you need quiet time, pushing you to do things you’ve already said you’re not comfortable with, or making jokes about something you’ve clearly asked them to stop. Over time it starts to wear on you.

For me, boundaries aren’t about pushing people away, they’re about protecting the relationship so it can actually stay healthy. When people respect them, things feel balanced. When they don’t, it creates tension and resentment.

I’ve learned that being upfront early on helps, but it also shows you a lot about people. The ones who respect your limits usually stick around. The ones who don’t often fade out.
