If you want more than friendship, don’t pretend you’re okay being “just friends”

By Eli Mercer on

I’m going to say this plainly because I’ve seen too many situations get messy from lack of clarity. If you want a relationship with someone, don’t fully settle into the friend zone hoping it will magically change later. Be honest about your intention early and respectfully. Not in a pushy way, but in a way that doesn’t leave room for confusion on either side. A lot of people end up frustrated because they never actually say what they want. They act like a friend, invest emotionally like a partner, then feel hurt when nothing shifts. That mixed signal setup usually leads to disappointment. Because the other person may only ever see you as support, not romance. At the same time, if you are in that space with her, don’t make the mistake of always trying to “fix” everything she says. It’s a common thing wanting to solve problems, give advice, step in, and help immediately. But sometimes she doesn’t need solutions. She just needs to talk, feel heard, and be understood without being corrected. Listening without rushing to fix things builds emotional connection in a different way. It creates safety, not pressure. And that matters in attraction too. People don’t just connect through advice; they connect through how they feel around you. So the balance is this: be clear about what you want, but also be present in how you show up. Clarity without pressure and support without trying to control every situation. Because relationships don’t grow from confusion or over-effort. They grow from honesty and emotional awareness.
