Should You Tell Your Friend Her Boyfriend Is Bad for Her?

By Eli Mercer on

A friend recently asked me if she should tell her best friend that she doesn't think her boyfriend is good for her. She wasn't saying it because she disliked him. She was worried because her friend had changed a lot since they started dating. She used to be confident, social, and happy to make plans. Now she constantly seemed stressed, canceled plans, second-guessed herself, and apologized for things that weren't really her fault. My friend wanted to say, "You need to leave him." I told her not to start there. When someone is in love, attacking their partner can make them feel like you're attacking them too. They may become defensive and stop telling you what's actually happening. Instead, talk about what you've noticed. "I miss you. I've noticed you've seemed unhappy lately, and I'm worried about you. I'm not trying to tell you who to date, but I care about you and I'm here if you ever need me." That's a completely different conversation. If she asks what you think about him, be honest. Talk about specific behavior rather than simply saying, "He's toxic" or "I don't like him." And then give her room to make her own decision. A good friend can point out a problem, but they can't make someone leave a relationship they're not ready to leave. Sometimes the most important thing isn't convincing your friend to break up. It's making sure she knows she has somewhere safe to turn if she eventually decides she wants out.
