Does Your Friend Like You Back?

By Real Ray C on

A friend recently told me he had started catching feelings for his best friend. They were already close, so he couldn't tell whether some of their interactions meant something more or if he was simply reading too much into them. He started paying attention to everything she did. The way she texted him, how often she wanted to hang out, whether she seemed nervous around him, and even whether she mentioned other guys. I told him to be careful with that. When you like someone, it's surprisingly easy to turn ordinary friendship into evidence that they might feel the same way. A long conversation doesn't necessarily mean attraction. Wanting to spend time together doesn't automatically mean romance. Even flirting can sometimes be part of someone's personality. Instead of looking for one magical sign, look at the bigger picture. Has the relationship actually changed, or are you the one seeing it differently? And if you're still unsure, eventually you have to stop trying to solve the mystery in your head. You can be honest without putting pressure on them. Something as simple as "I've started developing feelings for you, and I wanted to be honest about it. I don't want you to feel pressured, but I wanted to know if you could ever see us as more than friends." Their answer might be exactly what you hoped for. Or it might hurt. But either answer is better than spending months analyzing every text message and convincing yourself that a friendship must secretly mean something more.
